Kingston Recreation Ground is an essential green space in Portsmouth, serving the local community and providing much needed space for play, relaxation and sports. The old area featured a tired old play area, in much need of redevelopment. Portsmouth Council selected Timberplay to create the new destination play area as they were impressed with their initial plans to create a natural, durable inclusive play space to better serve the community. The Council executed a thorough engagement program to ensure the community were invested in the development and felt a sense of ownership.
The result is an outstanding play space, with a network of self-bind gravel accessible paths. A bespoke Fox sculpture signals arrival at the play area, and landscaping and carefully selected play products present a multitude of play opportunities. A sand and water area features a Building Site and a pebble play stream, with Playground Pump – a key play feature, particularly within the summer months, promoting excellent social play. A challenging Climbing Structure, Climbing Forest and a Rotating Disc offer a more thrilling play experience for older children and teenagers who also particularly love the unpredictability of the Belt Path. Two Zip Wires, placed side by side, encourage playful competition. A variety of swings are irresistible for children of all ages.
Sensory play experiences are provided by Sound Cushions and appropriate planting. Mounds and fallen trees add interest to the landscape, a generous number of boulders not only deliver play value, but also serve as the ideal perch for parents and carers. Picnic tables and benches are also positioned around the site. With so much to offer it is little wonder why Kingston Recreation Ground has been a huge hit with the local community.
