Context

The 190-bed Colony Farms Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Vancouver has been upgraded with security fencing manufactured in Britain by Zaun Ltd without impinging on the ongoing operation of the facility.

The hospital treats and rehabilitates people who have crossed the law and are deemed unfit to stand trial or not criminally responsible due to mental illness.

British Columbia fencing installer Streamline Fencing Ltd installed a total of 300m of HiSec 358 steel mesh fencing, working successfully alongside customised facilities manager BGIS and British Columbia Mental Health Services (BCMHS) to navigate around out of bounds areas during certain periods.

This is the first time a HiSec 358 style secure mesh has been used in Vancouver, Canada, which also facilitated bespoke installation in areas of the hospital.

The 4m-high fencing incorporates a barbed wire topping to provide additional security, along with special clamp bars and fixings.

It is the first time Zaun fencing has been installed in Canada.

Outcome

Streamline has created a safe and secure hospital that is aesthetically pleasing to the patients and staff within and to the community beyond, with anti-climb fencing from Zaun that provides full through-visibility.

BCMHS are so delighted with the result that they are looking at using a similar product on another hospital on Vancouver Island – while Streamline is in discussions to become the accredited distributor for Zaun in North America.
