Context

Over the last 5 years, considerable work has taken place on the Rossall Sea Defences, designed and built to protect thousands of homes from the risk of coastal flooding, as well as providing a new promenade to aid visitors and residents in appreciating the full beauty and rare flora and fauna of the area.

Work undertaken

Woodscape was tasked with providing a walkway over a location of biological importance and interest, that would both enhance the area and allow access to the promenade. In collaboration with Balfour Beatty and Blackpool & Wyre Councils, a design was developed that incorporated a stunning elliptical viewing platform, with easy access and DDA-compliant ramps.

As specialists in the use of Naturally Very Durable Hardwood, a timber essential for durability in marine-based installations, Woodscape was perfectly placed to craft a feature product that would both thrive in and complement this demanding environment. Use of 316 grade stainless steel tensioning further adds to the build's strength and durability, while acting as a subtle and stylish safeguard. Anti-slip decking ensures safe and easy passage for the many visitors looking to admire the grasslands or travel through to the promenade.

Woodscape also supplied a large quantity of Type 4 cantilevered wall seats to this £64 million scheme.

Outcome

By finishing many of the required elements at their Blackburn-based workshop utilising their 5-axis CNC, Woodscape was able to deliver and install a complex, bespoke product, with minimal time spent on-site, working closely with the principal contractor for an issue-free build.
