Context
Speakers' Corner, located on the north-east edge of London’s Hyde Park, is set aside for public speaking; historic figures such as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and George Orwell were known to use the area to demonstrate free speech.
Products supplied
Artform Urban was commissioned to supply a number of customised Icaro noticeboards, as part of the refurbishment of the area, designed to provide visitors with information regarding the history of the location.
A high level of collaboration with the commissioned artist was required, to ensure that the artwork was accurately recreated and, importantly, designed around the board fixing points.
The outer frame and supports of the Icaro double-sided noticeboard are manufactured from robust corten steel sheets, which have naturally been weathered in Artform Urban's factory to provide the unique colour and finish associated with weathering steel. To eliminate the possibility of any leaching onto the surface finish below, an organic sealer was applied to the finished product, guaranteeing a lasting, authentic rustic look. Combined with the precision stainless steel fixings, it was the perfect choice for framing these brightly coloured artworks and portraying the story.
Outcome
New visitors can now learn of the past events that shaped this site while the speakers continue to make modern day history.
