Coal Drops Yard in Kings Cross, London has undergone a dramatic transformation, thanks to the Vision of Heatherwick Studio. The former Victorian warehouses are London's newest retail destination and public space, making it a popular venue for people to eat, shop and attend events.
Work undertaken
Chris Nangle Furniture was commissioned by Heatherwicks Studio to help with the design and manufacture of a number of carved and charred oak benches for the newly completed project.
Once the design was finialised, Chris Nangle sourced the oak trees and had them sawn to size ready to carve at the company's Shropshire workshop.
The benches were hand-carved, then finished with their Shou Sugi Ban treatment; the oak was burnt, scrubbed and sealed to provide a dramatic hardwearing surface.
They were then deliverd to the site and installed.
Outcome
The result is a selection of stunning bespoke seats in a welcoming setting for visitors to sit and relax.
