Context

Tennis World in Middlesbrough has three outdoor and six indoor courts, which are used regularly by over 300 members and visitors. The club has been home to several national and international tennis players, including Commonwealth gold medalist Jocelyn Rae, and bronze medalist Sarah Borwell.

Problem

Next to the Tennis World facilities, and in close proximity to some of the outdoor courts and neighbouring skate park, is a large electrical power substation. The substation emits an audible and continous humming noise, which was causing a disturbance to users of the tennis courts, as well as being visually undesirable.

Solution

To mitigate the noise from the substation, Jacksons Fencing manufactured and supplied 93m of 6.5m-high Jakoustic® Plus fencing. Jakoustic® Plus was particularly suitable for the project since it uses a mineral Rockwool fibre and protective membrane that are designed for applications where the noise source is in a small or confined space like the substation. The fencing works by trapping and breaking down the sound frequency, diffusing the sound waves completely rather than reflecting them in a different direction.

Outcome

As well as mitigating the sound disturbance, the Jakoustic® Plus also hides the substation from view. The substation itself is also protected by the fencing's flat timber profile, which is difficult to scale.
