Challenge

The D-Day Museum in Portsmouth required the creation of a visually stunning surface that was both SuDS-compliant and hardwearing. Being a heritage site located on the coast meant that selecting the right durable product was key in delivering a successful project.

The newly installed surface needed to look great and contrast with the existing buildings and historic and coastal setting.

Due to the size of the installation areas and ground level fountain installations, the surface needed to be permeable and fully SuDS-compliant. The design scope of the project included a two-colour contrasting surface design to break up the area and highlight the delineated walkways.

Solution

Meon's DekorGrip range gave Portsmouth Council a wide choice on the visual appearance of the project.

With DekorGrip’s Resin Bound system chosen, the DekorGrip team just needed to find a blended match that worked best with the Museum's architecture. After agreeing with the client, a combination of Natural Wicker and Sandringham aggregate blends were selected to be laid at a depth of 20mm, which would sustain the demand of footfall. The choice of blends allowed the contractor to provide distinctive areas around the Museum, highlighting walkways.

Meon was also able to help the contractor throughout the project and overcome any issues encountered. Through close communication and planning of delivery, the 3000m2 was laid in a very short timescale and the Museum was ready in time for the grand opening by the Princess Royal.

Outcome

A SuDS-compliant surface that is both visually stunning and hardwearing was completed head of time.
