Challenge

A primary school in Thanet, Kent knew they had to take drastic measures to protect their 700 pupils, after continuously finding the adjacent field they used for lunchtimes and sports days covered in unsavoury litter. A busy public footpath runs parallel to the field, separating it from the school, so any passer by would have easy access to the field if it wasn’t properly secured. With caretakers more pressured than ever to keep up maintenance on such tight budgets, the job of tidying the field was becoming a worrying burden. They knew they needed to implement a long-term strategy that would have the lowest lifetime cost possible, which is where Jacksons Fencing were able to help.

Solution

We installed 117 metres of 2.4m high Euroguard® Regular fencing around the perimeter of the field, which, combined with the trees and bushes along the perimeter, prevent members of the public from seeing the field during use for added privacy. This particular type of fencing has an anti-climb design, so the area is unreachable until the gates are unlocked. The ‘V’ shaped style reinforces the strength of the panels, while the panel to post fixing is vandal-proof.

The installation also included a matching double leaf manual gate, so that access to the vulnerable area can be closely controlled. The double-leaf gates have 180° opening, and allow room for vehicles to drive in if need be, such as in the case of an emergency. They also ensure that large groups of people can safely enter and exit the field without being forced into single file.

Following the completion of the project, the pupils can now enjoy break times and sports days in a safe and clean environment, and staff members can fully dedicate their time to teaching and providing care for their pupils without any added worry. The field is also shared with Drapers Mill Primary Academy, so this extra security will also help to protect hundreds of other children during playtime and P.E. The caretakers can now concentrate on the main school site, completing usual tasks that ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children, without having to worry about the additional chaos of the field.

In the school playground, we installed Playtime® Timber Fencing. Playtime® gates can be self closing, so the gates shut even in the case of forgetfulness, which is essential when making sure children stay away from potential dangers such as busy roads or school car parks.
