Challenge

The head teacher of Walkley School in Sheffield asked Handspring Design to design a stage and covered seating for her primary school.

Solution

Drawing inspiration from the roof of the old Victorian school, and a slice of local Sheffield steel industrial heritage, Handspring came up with the stage and covered seating design, for which full planning permission was required.

Both structures are predominantly made from Douglas Fir, with steel shoes at ground level, and ply boards clad in corten steel for the roofs.

Benefit

150 children, the whole of the junior school, can squeeze onto the seating while watching their classmates perform.
