IOTA was commissioned to produce corten steel planters for the Hungate regeneration scheme in York city centre by joint developers, Lendlease.

Cradled in a bend of the River Foss, and a brief stroll from the city’s medieval heart, Hungate is a 4.1 hectare site lying on the edge of the business and retail core of York city centre.

When fully complete, the Hungate development will provide nearly 1000 new city centre apartments together with commercial and community space, as well as high-quality public spaces and landscaping.

Planters

The planters were manufactured from 2.0mm-thick corten steel, and are located within a communal landscaped garden which forms the heart of this phase of the development.

Five large and complex polygonal corten steel planters form the central focal points of the garden. All of the planters are 750mm high and have individual planter faces up to 3500mm in length. Planted with a mix of trees and shrubs, the internal bracing of each planter was specifically designed around the tree rootballs specified in the planting plan. Eye bolts are included in the base for tree anchor attachment. The planters also incorporate an architect-specified trim detail, to capture any corten steel run-off.

A further two 1500 (l) x 1500 (w) x 1050mm (h) corten steel tree planters are located on a pedestrianised street adjacent to the development.

An additional eight planters were manufactured from 2.0mm-thick zintec steel with a polyester powder coat finish in MARS 2525 Sable to complement the corten steel. These planters serve as planted vent covers to an underground car park, and were designed with false bottoms and stainless steel mesh grills. The planters are all 895mm high with varying lengths and widths up to 1805mm.
