Osborne House on the Isle of Wight was built for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat.
Traffic had taken its toll on the existing macadam roads and English Heritage needed to replace them with a tough, long-lasting surface that looked as if it had been laid in Queen Victoria’s time. The colour of any surfacing had to match the existing shingle loose chip of the courtyards and pathways and the warm sandstone colour of Osborne House.
Solution
Over 2,000m2 of Clearstone resin bound surfacing was used for the approach roads, and Clearstone Mocha was selected as the best match for the buildings and landscape. From Clearstone's Standard range, Mocha consists of 1-3 and 2-5mm shingle and quartz in a Tans, Uumber and Ochre colour.
It was essential that the road substrate was adequate for the traffic loading and so test pits were dug. Batten Civil Engineering planed-off the existing road surface and relaid it with a new base-coat for the resin bound gravel finish.
Despite poor weather and the logistics of transporting people and materials across to the island by ferry, Clearstone craftsmen laid 2,000m2 of resin bound (the equivalent of four football pitches) in 11 days in early 2017.
