Challenge

Bow Roundabout, an extremely busy intersection in East London, just north of Blackwall tunnel approach, was in urgent need of an upgrade due to its high volume of shared use. Safety concerns had to be addressed to make the junction a lot more approachable for cyclists and pedestrians, keeping them from danger of any vehicular movements. When the A11 overpass was built around 1970 the space underneath, inside and either side of the roundabout, was left largely redundant so there was plenty of scope to put this to good use.

The area underneath the A11 overpass needed to be aesthetically pleasing, and clearly indicate a safe passage through the busy intersection for both pedestrians and cyclists. So as well as the surface requiring subtle demarcation, or way-finding, it also needed to be hard wearing, non-slip with no trip hazards and little maintenance. It would be a challenge to safely off-load in the confines of the overpass and also complete big areas each day to eliminate any cold joints.

Work undertaken

DekorGrip Resin Bound Surfacing met the criteria perfectly and was selected as a main part of the regeneration project. Contrasting blends of resin bound were used to clearly segregate zones and areas around the roundabout, giving pedestrians and other users a safe and pleasing experience.

Most of the space that had previously remained waste and abandoned was now put to very good use, transforming the once drab and unused area, into a clearly marked zone with vastly increased visibility and awareness of all movement on this multi-use route.

Using Meon’s resin surfacing brand DekorGrip and working closely with TFL and Ringway Jacobs, the space could be fully utilised with the best systems provided to suit the needs at this location.

Outcome

The project went very smoothly and the area is now fully open to the public. TFL were very pleased with the outcome of the project - the roundabout now promotes a safe and consistent flow of traffic in the area.

Systems used

Contrasting blends were used within the project - one, a favourite from the DekorGrip range and another, a bespoke blend developed and sourced by the DekorGrip team.
