When looking to purchase a planter, the choice of materials, shapes, colours, sizes and accessories can make this seem like a daunting task. To make this easier Round Wood of Mayfield have put together a list of questions you should consider when picking the perfect planter.
Will the pot have space for the plants roots to flourish?
If you’re not a gardening expert, it may be worth asking your plant seller for advice on root growth and potting when purchasing the planter. If in doubt, it is advised to choose a planter that has a generous base like the box or cylinder shape, not one that tapers at the base.
How big will the plant grow and how quickly (you don’t want to be re-potting in a few months)?
With some trees and shrubs repotting is inevitable, although for many flowers and plants a slightly oversized container will allow for plant growth without the need to upgrade. For a Purple Japanese Maple Tree, an Adezz Corten Steel Atlas Cylinder boasts a large potting area and offers years of services.
Does the container have drainage to prevent the plant from drowning?
Unlike rain water that falls on the ground, in planters the water has nowhere to drain without drainage holes, which can drown it and rot the plants roots. Most external planters either come with drainage holes or they can be drilled upon request, including those from our following ranges; Fibrestone, Clayfibre, Polystone, Terracino, Ironstone, Corten Steel and many more offered on roundwood.com. The planters that do not feature drainage holes are usually those for internal use.
Does the planter need to be portable?
Perhaps the planter needs to be moved into the sun in the evenings or out of the cold in the winter. If so, a Wagner Trolley would aid portability. The Wagner Trolleys make moving heavy pots simple with a choice of internal and external options.
Think about the surroundings and where the planter will be situated, are they traditional, contemporary, urban or quirky – Here are some recommendations based on ranges we offer.
Traditional planters – Both the Terracino and Clayfibre are made from natural materials which emit salts as they age, adding to their character.
Contemporary planters – The Fibrestone and Adezz Fibreglass range are available in a choice of colours, and a huge variety of shapes and sizes.
Urban planters – Adezz Corten Steel and Aluminium are strong, eye catching and work great with urban designs and commercial settings.
Quirky planters – The Glazed and Yakuta Water Jars are clay based with bright unique colouration in their glazed finish.
Does the planter feature a drainage channel, or would it benefit from being raised?
There are a choice of pot feet to suit different planter materials or Trolleys with brakes to keep a pot raised yet secure. Some planter’s benefit from being raised up by pot feet or on a Wagner Trolley, to aid drainage.
