Traditional bespoke oak signage for the National Trust
Croft Castle in Herefordshire required improved signage as part of the National Trust Hereford’s long-term heritage strategy. Using traditional joinery techniques and materials, robust bespoke oak signs were constructed and installed by Fitzpatrick Woolmer. These were influenced by the period architecture in order to suit the setting and enhance the visitor experience.
Croft Castle is a National Trust site located in the heart of Yarpole, Herefordshire and was once home to the Croft family and Croft baronets. It started out as a Norman stronghold on the border of Wales, but was transformed into a lavish country mansion. Surrounded by magnificent areas of woodland, farmland and parkland, this National Trust site is filled with character and history.
As part of the National Trust Hereford’s long-term heritage strategy, Croft Castle needed improved signage and to be made more accessible.
Solution
Using traditional carpentry and joinery techniques and materials, robust bespoke oak signs were constructed and installed by Fitzpatrick Woolmer. These blended well into their heritage environment and would weather and silver as time passed.
Permanently engraved lettering and logos ensured that the messages would remain legible, even as the oak changed colour, and full colour printed n-viro™ panels display walk and trail information, ensured visitors got the most from their visit.
Outcome
The heritage signage makes a good impression and will continue to enhance the site for year to come.
This project is an excellent example of how the way that bespoke signs can enhance the Spirit of Place. With detailing and construction techniques influenced by the period architecture they fit comfortably into their setting and enhance the visitor experience.
