Livingreen was approached to design and manufacture a bespoke seating and planter solution for the University of Derby. The planters were to be used on terraces at the University to create an amenity for students and staff.

Work undertaken

Livingreen helped to visualise the planters using 3D CAD facilities, and once they were approved, converted the designs into shop drawings so that bespoke moulds could be made up.

Each planter and bench was created with curves in different places, so that they formed a sinuous line once placed together.

Livingreen had to ensure the planters and benches were sufficiently strengthened while also being light enough for the terrace to hold them. Striking this balance of high strength and light weight was achieved by using Livingreen's advanced composite material.

The planters were finished in standard textured metallic silver. A textured finish is the best choice for use outdoors as it hard wearing, UV resistant and frost proof.

Once the benches were installed, they were clad with a wooden top. This added detail helps to distinguish the benches from the planters.

Outcome

This project used Livingreen's design and bespoke manufacturing capabilities.

The finished product is visually beautiful and simultaneously useful.
