The Project

The famous Cheltenham racecourse underwent a £45 million redevelopment, the largest of its kind by the site’s owner, The Jockey Club. The Princess Royal Grandstand, named after Princess Anne, was officially opened by her Royal Highness.

The dramatic work undertaken at Cheltenham included the construction of the new a five-and-a-half-storey grandstand with a capacity for 6,500 spectators, new hospitality boxes, a royal box, and a premium super club on the top floor.

In addition to the construction of the new grandstand, the area outside the entrance to the racecourse also underwent a significant programme of improvement, with new paving and street furniture.

Project Solution

Zenith benches were selected for the external seating of the site. Forty-one benches were supplied in total, all in stainless steel with iroko timber slats. The benches were placed in a variety of different arrangements in the open space outside the entrance to the racecourse, with both straight and curved benches used to create seating areas for victors.

Curved benches were used around trees to form a selection of arcs as well as closed circles, providing varied and interesting seating options.

The new benches provide a welcoming public seating space outside the racecourse for large numbers of visitors, whilst truly enhancing the aesthetics of the whole entrance area.

The project has been deemed a huge success by all involved, and the stage is now set for the world famous 2016 Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup race in March.
