Situated at the heart of the newly developed Upper Cambourne Housing Estate, the Upper Cambourne play area was designed to be a community hub, a focal point for children and families living in the area. Designed by Randall Thorp for their clients MCA, Upper Cambourne Play area has created a very exciting landscape led play area, with key pieces of play equipment to appeal to a wide demographic.
Timberplay provided several pieces of equipment, including Playhouses, Wobbly Horses and a Peter Cart & Horse, all perfect for toddler play, along with a high energy zip wire which is very popular with older children and teenagers.
A moulded concrete waterplay feature serves as an aesthetic centrepoint, housing an Archimedes Screw, Playground Pump and the Water Wheel. Wooden gutters direct the water down towards the ball and chain plug. An adjoining sand area enables children to experience playing with sand and water together.
The most exciting thing about this play area however is the way in which it uses the landscape to create wonderful play opportunities. Grass banks, mounds and long grasses create different wild play opportunities, perfect for running down, clambering up, swishing through and hiding. Felled trees have been used as balancing trunks, spanning the mounds, with stepping logs also creating interesting pathways up and over the mounds. A stone circle adds interest to the site, promoting imaginative play or quiet reflection. Wild flowers and meadows have been used throughout to create habitats for animals and insects.
