Handspring designed, manufactured and installed a 7x5m outdoor classroom for Dore Primary School in Sheffield.
The frame is made using traditonal timber framing, and all joints are draw dowelled with oak pegs. The main frame is made from freshly sawn UK FSC Douglas Fir. A suspended floor, again in Douglas Fir, was included with thin boards to reduce shrinkage. Handspring created a lantern with coloured acrylic panels to bring light into the middle of the structure. A sedum green roof was added on top.
The main frame was made in Handspring's workshop in Sheffield and took around a day to construct on site, using a telehandler. There was then about another week's worth of work adding the floor, purlins, board and green roof.
Handspring's engineer was involved in the timber sizing and foundation detail and the project went through planning regulations.
The school's PTA commissioned and paid for the building.
