Challenge

The contract for design and build of three Uxbridge schools: Hillingdon Primary, Rabbsfarm Primary and John Loche Academy was to be a mix of new build and refurbishments, with a generic fence included in the design by the initial client architect.

There was a performance specification for perimeter security that met the needs of the London Borough of Hillingdon, and the requirements for the tender process.

Solution

CLD contacted the relevant companies at tender stage to ascertain the actual design objectives. Secured by Design was quickly identified as the main driver in all three projects.

As well as ensuring that a high standard of security is achieved in all areas of the school boundary and access points, Secured by Design also enables the contractor to claim BREEAM points to achieve a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating for the project.

The solution became very simple and obvious and Dulok-6 SR1™ Double Wire high security panel system was selected. Collaboration with all parties throughout the design and construction process led to the desired result. CLD Fencing looked at the projects as one job and answered all the requirements for the design objectives at an early stage.

The company then worked with the main contractor and a CLD-approved contractor to demonstrate the potential economies of scale that could be achieved by procuring all sites together.

Outcome

When fencing for several sites is procured together and processed as a single factory order, all of the processes, from early manufacturing through to final delivery, are combined. This reduces time spent handling and at the numerous stages, creating direct savings that are passed back up the line.

This approach produced a win-win for all parties.

  • The design architect was happy as the design objectives were met consistently across all sites.
  • The main contractor was satisfied as the cost advantages were passed on and any documentation, product guarantees, etc were consistent.
  • The CLD-approved contractor gained even more as they were able to plan and confirm their program of works ahead of time, and the combined contract size created its own installation economies.
