Bespoke steel planters, Autism Day Care & Respite Centr
In 2015 IOTA were contracted to manufacture and install 2 very large, bespoke powder coated steel planters to be situated in the grounds of The Craigmillar district Autism Day Care and Respite Centre. The £4m development was largely funded by Edinburgh City Council to provide care for adults with learning disabilities and autism including accommodation for up to 6 people and respite care facilities for up to 55 individuals per year.
The planters were developed to be positioned in the central courtyard, providing visual and sensory aids and sit amongst sculptural seating for visitors and users.
The large trough planters measured between 3,000 mm long by 2,500 mm wide to 7,000 mm long by 2,500 mm wide and stood at 450 mm tall. The planters were created from 1.5mm zintec steel and finished with a polyester powder coat. Owing to the large scale of the planters, they were supplied in strengthened sections that were designed to join together below soil level, giving a visually continuous planting aesthetic whilst disguising the vertical stiffeners and cross bracing.
