Requirement

Daubeney Primary School wanted to develop a long, narrow area that housed an old temporary classroom and an early years area that was split over two levels and joined by a set of steps. 

Solution

Learning Through Play designed the space to incorporate a new classroom and open up the area to create a free flow environment.

The two levels were joined by creating a mound in the centre.

The cycle track acted as an easy walk way up and down for push-chairs whilst providing a hill to cycle up and down.

To maximise space use, Learning Through Play suggested moving a fence and orientating the classroom at one end. The corner next to the bike bob run was a great space for an outside classroom with a covered polycarbonate roof. Tucked out the way it was a quiet space for teaching outdoors with formal sleeper bench seating, large blackboard and a small stage for performances.

A bespoke play and storage unit was designed with a roller shutter door to store bikes and a kiosk window for role play during the day when the bikes were out. This was located next to the parking area for the cycle track.

The Imagination Area provided a structured area for children to engage in imaginary play with four sensory logs, blackboards, mirrors and giant storytelling chair.

The central adventure mound featured a fort with a cave beneath which was linked with a talk tube. A scramble net, small climbing wall and artificial grass slide made sure there was plenty of challenging play. An existing balance beam and tractor tyres were also used in this area to add further interest.

Other work undertaken

Learning Through Play also converted an unused area of grass into a superb area for children to use in another part of the school. Large raised growing boxes were installed, one for each class, to provide a space for vegetable and plant cultivation. A play unit was then relocated into the area and a large amphitheatre was designed and built.
