Challenge

Millfield Park was a tired, old play area in great need of development, with wet pour surfacing in need of refreshment. With a very limited budget of £80,000 it was always going to be a challenge to inject the natural play opportunities that the play space so desperately needed.

Aileen Shackell Landscape Design and Play Consultant Phil Doyle won a competition to transform the park; they created a design which capitalised on the equipment which still worked within the site, but used the budget to add natural elements, such as an extensive sand play area, fallen oak tree climbing structure and playable entrance to the park.

Solution

Aileen and Phil also selected equipment from Timberplay to boost the play opportunities within the space – a car tyre swing, small playing house, platform house and, to provide onsite refreshment, an Atlantida Drinking Fountain from the Santa & Cole range.

Outcome

This site demonstrates exceptionally well how to use small budgets to exponentially increase the play value within a site.

Aileen and Phil resisted the temptation to spend money on ripping up the wet pour, which delivers nothing in terms of play value, and instead built on top of this to create a huge sand play area with timber edging and decking areas to make it accessible to wheelchairs and prams.
