Boost your BREEAM score with well positioned cycle parking
As you know, providing adequate cycle storage in your new project is essential. But how do you ensure that it is fit for purpose? When it comes to user friendliness, the location of your bicycle parking is as important as the style of storage you install.
Location
There are three things to remember when adding cycle parking to your next design.
Cycle stands should always be installed on a hard, durable surface. They should not be installed on grass. Grass is unsuitable as the constant use of the cycle stands will wear away the surface, leaving a muddy puddle.
Cycle parking should be covered to protect bicycles from the elements.
Bicycles should be stored in an easily accessible location. In a perfect world, cycle stands should be installed within 100m of the building's entrance. However, if this is not possible cycle stands must be positioned in a prominent, well lit area.
Following these rules will ensure that your cycle storage space complies to both the BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes guidelines.
Installation
In order to meet BREEAM regulations, cycle stands must be installed in such a way that allows for "appropriate access to the cycle storage space".
What constitutes appropriate access?
At AUTOPA we recommend that Sheffield style cycle stands are positioned 800mm apart and at least 600mm away from a wall. This allows for easy parking of two bicycles per stand without wasting valuable space.
Ideally, stands should be positioned at least 1m away from a kerb to prevent bicycles from being damaged by passing vehicles.
