Challenge

Large circular planters were required either side of the main front entrance to the hotel. These containers were to be planted with 5m high palm trees. Lower level, tiered planters were specified to be located outside the Savoy Grill, in Savoy Court.

At the rear of the hotel, semi-circular planters were required to be positioned against the hotel walls either side of the rear entrance. To complete the Savoy Place rear entrance refurbishment, bespoke window boxes were required to be fitted to the lower level windows.

The materials specified were mild steel and polyester powder coated with mirror polished stainless steel base plinths.

Solution

The design and technical personnel at Street Design worked with the project architect to develop and manufacture the bespoke products. The planters and window boxes were manufactured using thick grade mild steel sheet with internal structural mild steel frames.

The mirror polished “S” logo letters and the planter base plinths were designed to ensure that all fixings were hidden, ensuring a high quality finish to all products.

The planters and window boxes were delivered to site, off-loaded and positioned using a delivery vehicle with a piggy-back fork lift truck. This ensured a quality, quick installation, causing minimum disruption to the hotel.

Outcome

On completion of the installation, the planters and window boxes were filled and planter by the soft landscape contractor.

The bespoke containers were planted with the topiary cats, palm trees, coloured bedding plants and a large number of trimmed boxus sempervirens plants to create a stunning, contemporary planting scheme.

The high quality bespoke planters and specialised planting at the front and rear of the hotel, produced the finished result the Fairmont Group were wanting to achieve having fully refurbished the hotel, bringing it back to being one of the world’s greatest, historic hotels.
