Challenge
Scarborough harbourside was perceived as divided, run-down and road-dominated. The Council and Yorkshire Forward wanted to redevelop the area to make it a place for lingering, enjoying the views and attracting inward investment. Improvements were to include street furniture.
Solution
Woodscape designed innovative hardwood seating, a fisherman’s lock-up and bus stop for the town’s historic fishing harbour, mindful of the need to accommodate some major uses and withstand the coastal environment.
The large ‘loafer’ seats are widely considered as sculptural as well as functional objects. Benches varied in length from 5-20m and were supplied in modular kit form for on-site assembly. Seats were constructed from FSC certified Naturally Very Durable Hardwood and specially engineered components in marine-grade stainless steel.
Outcome
The new look harbour has already attracted investment with a number of restaurants and eateries taking the opportunity to offer their customers a table with a stunning view.
