Challenge

Castle Street is the civic heart of Liverpool and the historic centre of the city, running between the site of the medieval castle and the Georgian Town Hall. It is within the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Castle Street Conservation Area and there is a great concentration of superb quality architecture.

This public realm project sought to conserve and enhance the character of the streetscape whilst making a more exciting and accessible environment, day and night. It was to provide a safe pedestrian dominated space which can be closed to traffic from time to time for festivals and other events.

Solution

Woodscape designed and manufactured a series of bespoke timber and stainless steel street furniture ensuring all elements of the scheme reflected the civic grandeur of the street.

Outcome

Castle Street is of great historical importance to the City of Liverpool as the home of the Town Hall and with many fine listed buildings. The regeneration has made it more attractive to live, work and invest in the area.
