Challenge

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council wanted to create a space where the local community in the borough could enjoy bands, events and activities outdoors.

The existing arena on the campus in Welwyn Garden City was the obvious location, but was looking tired and required renovation, with most of the area having not seen any improvement for over 70 years.

The improvement work involved repaving the old concrete using resin-bonded shingle, cleaning, refurbishing and lighting an existing monument, up-lighting trees, lighting a terrace, replanting hedges and adding new benches.

Branson Leisure was contacted to provide long curved outdoor seating for the arena.

Solution

Branson Leisure’s craftsmen manufactured the Westminster-style curved benches to flow precisely against the arena's raised step.

The bespoke curved benches on each side of the arena consist of seven sections and, once fixed together, produced a total run of 32.3m.

A further seven 1.95m Westminster benches were supplied, along with two bespoke benches measuring 1.7m. The 1.7m benches were made to a shorter length to sit perfectly within a new brick-built alcove.

Outcome

The revamped Campus Arena is now a place that can be enjoyed by many. It is open as a local entertainment venue to local groups to use for small music events, as a meeting point, and for dance and theatre events.
