Context

The fountain at Somerset House – a major arts and cultural centre in central London – has had a great influence on fountain design in the UK since Victorian times.

Work undertaken

In the mid-1990s, a choreographed dry plaza fountain was installed, the first of its kind in the UK. It comprises 55 jets, which rise from a paved courtyard and provides an iconic attraction for both children and adults.

A Komet 10-14T nozzle type provides the water jets while the system is illuminated via a fibre optic system and is controlled by a DMX system.

The dry plaza style of fountain popular in the USA for many years is now the most popular form of water feature installed in the UK.

Fountains Direct has also been involved in dry plaza projects at The Royal Academy of Arts, Themes Barrier Park and Lyric Square, all in London; Greater Williamson Square and Chavesse Park in Liverpool; The Hub in Milton Keynes; Kingston marketplace; and Burghley House Garden of Surprises.
