Helen Michie Ceramics & Mosaic - mosaic artists
Originally from Edinburgh, I now live in the incredibly beautiful west coast of Scotland. My raku, stoneware and porcelain ceramic works and paintings are informed by the elements, light and natural environment of the Scottish west coast but created to try and capture both the strength and impermanence of the natural world.
The unpredictable nature and beauty of the outdoor raku smoke firing influenced by the elements and seasons gives each Raku wall piece a unique sense of light, time and place.
The hand built stoneware bowl forms use the equally organic fluid nature of the high firing stoneware glazes alongside the movement of textured clay to create ceramics rooted in the coastal landscape.
My porcelain sculptural pieces are influenced by the movement of the sea and the unique marine habitat and use a limited palette of colour alongside dynamic forms.
The mixed media paintings convey the atmosphere of the coastal environment and the movement of the underwater world using textures and colour.
In addition to creating ceramics and paintings I am an experienced Community Artist and run workshops and Community Art projects and festivals and have been involved with Community Arts since working as a Public Artist in Glenrothes, Fife. I have also worked as an Arts development officer and Schools cultural co-ordinator here in the Highlands and have been fortunate to have the opportunity to create more Public Art works throughout the area.
