Often used outdoors, the equipment can be particularly suitable for promoting inclusive play , and often lends itself well to disabled access .

Many elements can be incorporated into these play areas, including drums, glockenspiel, chimes, gongs and other instruments. Xylophones can be tuned to chromatic or pentatonic scales, and the instruments can be designed to encourage children to play individually or together.

In addition to music, sensory play facilities can incorporate smells, light effects, and sand and water play to stimulate the children’s imagination.
