Challenge

Media City at was the UK's first purpose-built media development, created across 200 acres of Salford Quays in Manchester.

Gillespies designed all of the public spaces, streets and waterside areas. The practice created a hard landscaped area, Media Square, which can function as a performance space holding 5000 people; as well as Media Park, a contemporary soft landscaped area containing 86 new trees – a green space in which to traverse, relax, play, broadcast or work quietly.

Hard landscape edge restraints were required, that would be flexible enough to create the desired effect without being overly obtrusive.

Solution

Kinley's AluExcel AE100M was specified for the project.

Outcome

Kinley's AluExcel AE100M enabled the contractor, English Landscapes to create the distinctive shapes and sweeping, sinuous curves that the architect had invisaged.

English Landscapes won the BALI Grand Award in 2011 for the project.
