Background

Alfold Parish Council commissioned Fresh Air Fitness to design and install a new outdoor gym at Alfold Recreation Ground in Surrey. The facility was intended to be free to use for all residents throughout the year.

The site chosen was beside the Village Hall, and the project was led by Councillor Martin Richardson. The council's objective was to provide residents with accessible, free-to-use fitness equipment in an outdoor setting.

Challenges

The site featured sloping ground, which required groundworks and landscaping before equipment could be positioned. The council also wanted to include a jogging track as part of the overall facility.

As part of its standard approach, Fresh Air Fitness carried out an on-site consultation to establish the specific requirements of the community. This process covered who the facility would serve, how the equipment would be used, and what outcomes the council wanted to achieve. The consultation also addressed site-specific factors including tree preservation orders, access constraints, and ground conditions.

Solution

The council selected the Fresh Air Fitness Big Rig alongside a range of standalone equipment, with the aim of providing users with full-body workout options.

Fresh Air Fitness completed the groundworks, installed the equipment, and laid the jogging track as agreed. The surrounding area was seeded to integrate the gym into the wider recreation ground. All equipment was fitted with instructional signage to support users in exercising safely and independently.

To mark the opening, Fresh Air Fitness delivered a training session for the community, covering how to use each piece of equipment and providing example workout ideas.
