Context

Chris Nangle Furniture was commissioned to design and fabricate a series of 8 bespoke benches for the 'From Mountain to Sea' Covid Memorial Programme in Aberdeenshire.

Collaborating with artist Claudia Zeiske and renowned fiddler Paul Anderson, the company helped bring to life a new walking route stretching from the summit of Ben Macdui to Peterhead Harbour.

The task was to create 'creative markers' - spaces of quiet contemplation tucked into the diverse geography of Aberdeenshire.

Project detail

The eight selected locations feature benches from a unique family of furniture. Each has its own bespoke design with a combination of carved surfaces and gentle curves, arm rests and half backs in materials ranging from charred and carved locally-grown green oak, to fully-reclaimed greenheart timber salvaged from UK ports.

Every bench is CNC-carved with the Mountain to Sea logo and a QR code, allowing visitors to listen to a specially composed album of music as they take in the panoramic views.

Outcome

Views from the benches range from rivers and mountains, wildflower meadows and woodlands, to the final bench at Peterhead overlooking the North Sea toward Norway, connecting people across regions, and offering places for reflection, contemplation and healing.
