Context

Theories Landscapes was contracted to modernise an existing play area at Trafalgar Junior School in Twickenham into a vibrant, colourful space.

The modernisation was part of a wider initiative to encourage more parents and pupils to walk to and from school. To support this, the client also wanted to create clearly-defined walking routes which incorporated scooter tracks for the children to follow.

Challenge

The main challenge was the existing sloped site. Theories used decking to level the slope, and to remove a step down outside a classroom door, providing a level transition from classroom to play area.

Contingency plans were also put in place in case of poor weather.

The project had a limited, fixed budget, and was to be constructed over a 3-week period during school holidays to avoid disruption.

Solution

The company sat down with the client to discuss their requirements and an early design idea. Theories' suggestion for dividing the play area to suit different age groups was particularly well received, and accepted following some minor changes.

The design consisted of painted areas, colour-coded to delineate walking routes and scooter tracks from the play areas. Raised sandpits and planting areas were incorporated, divided by picket fencing to accommodate the different year groups using the area at the same time. Decking with a colourful welly boot storage area was also included.

Outcome

A formerly dull and empty area has been transformed into an inviting, colourful play space that pupils and parents were excited to see.

The client was very happy with the result and in the way the project was delivered.
