Context
Located within the Westminster Cathedral conservation area, Ashley Gardens is one of Westminster's most sought after mansion buildings. It is located close to the open spaces of Green Park and St James's Park, the numerous shops and restaurants at Cardinal Place, and the transport links at both St James's Park and Victoria Stations. The 7th floor roof terrace affords stunning views of Westminster Cathedral and its piazza, as well as of the neighbouring districts of London.
Work undertaken
IOTA was commissioned by the Residents' Group to design and supply a planted perimeter around the roof terrace, which would be the sole safety perimeter for the completely exposed terrace.
IOTA was responsible for all works - apart from installation - including site survey, design, manufacture and supply.
IOTA’s design passed structural engineer evaluation and met the requirements of the City of Westminster Planning Office in terms of providing a secure edge protection against falls from height from the roof terrace.
Design elements
- 84 linear metres of 500 (w) x 1100mm (h) inter-connected steel planters with integrated balustrades.
- Planters shaped to follow the recesses of the roof terrace perimeter.
- 2x lockable gates at entry points to roof terrace.
- 8x removable ‘sluice gates’ with security locks to enable maintenance access to drains outboard of the planted perimeter.
- Integration with mansafe system, to enable safe working outboard of the planted perimeter (drain maintenance, window cleaning, etc).
