The planters provide a discrete barrier to traffic
St James Street in Taunton was previously a busy cobbled road open to traffic, but with no safe pavement areas there was a potential danger to pedestrians. The local council decided to trial a 12-month pedestrianisation of the street using street furniture to block both ends of the street to vehicles.
Solution
Benchmark was asked to provide large outdoor planters that could be used to provide a safe but sympathetic barrier. Corten steel planters were selected and installed, and designed so that they could be easily removed at the end of the trial period should residents decide that they preferred the street to be open to traffic. The planters have a reinforced structure and self-levelling feet, so can be easily forklifted to a different location if required.
The corten steel planters will gradually rust over time to provide an attractive, natural weathered finish, and the council is currently exploring option to enhance the street further with additional items of furniture.
