Context

Long & Waterson Apartments is a development of 119 re-imagined lofts, new-build apartments and penthouses in Shoreditch, London. The development includes 1400 sq m of landscaped community gardens, designed by Alexandra Steed URBAN.

The design included 11 extremely large planters (largest length 24620mm), each multi-sectioned and of complex form and geometry.

Project details

Landscape contractors LDC commissioned the planters from IOTA on the basis of design, manufacture and supply.

The scale of the individual planters, and the ambition of the planting, required extensive design detailing to accommodate drainage, irrigation, and also the rootballs of substantial trees.

The overall scale of the project also posed scheduling and logistical challenges; the planters were delivered to site in a pre-specified order, via 7 artic trailers, in a programme phased over 8 weeks.

The planters were fabricated from 2.0mm zintec steel, polyester powder-coated to RAL 9007 [Grey aluminium].
