ASF Roker posts, made to an original Victorian pattern
ASF was approached to look at the possibility of bringing an original Victorian post into its foundry site and using that to create a pattern to produce more posts to be fitted to Roker Pier near Sunderland.
The original post had been exposed to the sea air for over 100 years and although it had been repainted on occasion, it had received very little in the way of meaningful maintenance. As always with cast iron, the original post, although heavily weathered by the salt air, was in remarkably good condition and still strong and substantial.
Work undertaken
ASF took resins from the original post to create a new handmade pattern, using many of the same techniques that would have been used when the original post was made.
Over 500 new posts were made with the pattern being hand moulded and then the moulds hand poured, again, much in the same way as the original posts.
The new posts were manufactured from 100% recycled cast iron - the vast majority of the raw material being recycled car brake discs.
The posts were installed along the refurbished Roker Pier and should last at least another 100 years.
