A corporate entertaining area on the roof of Television House required a retrofitted series of corten steel planters but weight loading issues meant that this was impractical. Work undertaken
Livingreen Design already had a corten steel effect which could be used on their GRP products however the rust effect transferred on contact.
For this project, the corten steel finish was pre-aged with a rain effect and then laquered to create a permanent seal.
As the planters were being made, the consultant advised Livingreen that the weight of the compost would be too heavy for the site so all the planters were pre-fitted with polystyrene blocks, leaving around 20cm depth for planting.
The roof of the building has an iconic curve so an arc of planters was designed to fit the curvature as well as a series of block-shaped planters.
In addition, a number of modular GRP cog-shaped tables were created using the same aged corten steel effect which could be moved easily and slot into one another as required.
Outcome
The lightweight planters solved the weight loading problem and the corten steel finish created the urban, industrial feel that the client requested.
