- ASF Bike Shaped Cycle Stands manufactured for Halfords
The brief
ASF was approached by Halfords Store Development Team to design a customer cycle stand for their new build and refurbishment projects nationwide.
Based on an idea brought to the table by Halfords that the stands should be in some way bicycle shaped, ASF set about coming up with a design that would suit the brief.
The final product had to meet budget requirements, be easily available as either root fixed or base plated, and be modular so that units could multiply up or down depending on available space at different stores.
The solution
ASF's solution was to pre-produce a series of cycle shaped profiles in 50mm tube, ready for root fixing but manufactured so they could be altered to baseplate on the day of dispatch if needed. Cycle units bolt together with subtle security fixings so that multiple stands can be placed in a line and look like a single long rack.
As default the stands went out as a '3 hoop' (6 bike) design.
Generally the cycle stands were to be paint finished with a polished stainless steel option, but ASF decided that manufacturing all the stands in stainless steel was best as it meant that alterations and any specialist works could be carried out without the need for acid dipping and re-galvanising that would have been incurred if mild steel was used. The other benefit of this is that powder coated finishes over stainless steel give a very high quality end product.
The product is a huge success and now graces over 50 Halfords storefronts nationwide.
