In 2015, for the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) show, IOTA had the pleasure of donating 2 bespoke Corten steel planters. Part of Gardening Scotland 2015, the RBGE show ‘A Cryptogamic Journey from Edinburgh to Logan’ was designed by Susanna Harley and built by students on the Gardening Design Course at RBGE. Inspiration for the garden came from student work and the RBGE’s world-leading research into cryptograms as a vitally important biological grouping. This research focuses on fungi, bryophytes, pteridophytes and algae. The garden was awarded a Silver-Gilt Medal, and the Best New Show Garden Award.

To complement the intelligent garden design, two L-shaped planters measuring 1700/1600mm (l) x 500mm (w) x 700mm (h) were designed, manufactured and donated by IOTA. They were located at the central, transitional space of the garden and provided flanking and framing to a path of diatom-inspired stepping stones, creating a passage through the lawn of moss (bryophytes). In contrast to cryptograms muted tones due to their lack of flowers or seeds, Corten steel was selected to provide a bold, bright orange palette to bring out the hues of the spores.
