Challenge

Events company Production Bureau designed a stunning venue for a corporate client with a 20x16m, three-way Saddlespan fabric canopy centrepiece. Director, Mungo Delap, had not previously specified fabric on this scale and had detailed performance criteria for the canopy, including high levels of light translucency for imagery projection, interface with rigs for lighting, large flat screens and rapid installation requirements.

When Mungo approached Fabric Architecture, framing company Prolyte had already been appointed to fabricate the supporting structure. Fabric Architecture's design team worked closely to ensure that the canopy model married perfectly with Prolyte’s frame design.

Solution

The canopy fit-out was installed well ahead of schedule.

Structure:

  • Type: Bespoke Internal Barrel Vault
  • Model: 20x16m Saddlespan

Requirements and features:

  • Feature 20x16m Saddlespan canopy
  • High-quality Aroura fabric providing excellent levels of light translucency
  • Interfacing included for lighting rigs and imagery projection
  • Combined working with other manufactures for successful installation

Outcome

The combined resources and interplay of the three companies resulted in a stunning venue. Following the World Cup, the client made the venue available for commercial hire.

Mungo Delap, Director: ‘As a designer it is fantastic to find a company with such technical knowledge and skill in their field, that they can truly bring our ideas to life.

‘Choosing key partners to deliver a project like this is always a hard decision; I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment in recommending Fabric Architecture to anyone in a similar situation.

‘For me the technical design and panelling of fabric structures has been a learning curve through this project. Never underestimate the technical skill it takes to deliver a clear span fabric of this size, something that can look so simple on your model takes some doing when it’s life size.

‘The hard work is done in the drawing and panelling of the canvas but the care and attention that Nigel and the team added on site certainly added an element of perfection to the finished result.”

‘A huge thank you to all the team at Fabric Architecture for exceeding our expectations and making my ideas possible – I hope we get to do it all again soon!’
