Hot-Applied thermoplastic is a 100% solid compound containing pigments, glass beads, binder, and filler which becomes liquid when heated. It is heated to around 200°C on application, but cools and sets within a few minutes. This is particularly useful for application in built-up areas as the road can become trafficable within a short period of time, thus causing minimum disruption to road users.
One of the main benefits of using thermoplastic road markings is the improvement to road safety that comes with them. Thermoplastic markings can be made to be highly reflective which means that they are much easier to see at night or in bad weather conditions where visibility is poor.
Thermoplastic markings can be applied in thick, built-up layers in order to create rumble strips. This provides drivers with physical feedback in the form of a noticeable vibration and an audible rumbling noise. This helps raise awareness of upcoming danger spots and warns drivers to watch their speed - all in an attempt to prevent collisions and accidents.
