The Rootlok vegetated gravity wall system offers engineers, architects, contractors and others an engineered solution for building retaining walls quickly and easily. Rootlok can be used to build standard gravity walls in small applications up to 2.1m high, as well as reinforced structures 4m or more in height.
Rootlok applies standard soil stabilisation practices and engineering methods to build retaining walls at near vertical angles. The system of Rootlok Bags and Rootlok Plates creates a ‘segmented’ wall face that easily integrates vegetation.
The Rootlok vegetated gravity wall system is extremely versatile, allowing it to be used in many applications, including:
- erosion control
- slope stabilisation
- river and flood protection
- landscaping
- headwalls
Rootlok has been used successfully for river applications. Moisture easily filters through the system rather than being reflected, making it an ideal solution for wet locations. In low flow conditions, Rooltok can be installed in rivers and streams without the need to redirect the water.
Reinforced walls
A range of geogrids can be used with the Rootlok bags and locking plates in reinforced slope applications, with the advantage of using site-won material as fill.
Installation
One of the key benefits of Rootlok is that it is simple to install, unlike hard edge structures such as concrete, stone, block, panel and gabion systems. This allows it to be used in locations with difficult and varied terrains that are not suitable for traditional methods.
Bags
Rootlok bags are produced from a strong, non-woven geotextile, specially designed to be water-permeable and flexible allowing moisture and roots free movement while retaining soil particles. Available in:
- Black
- Green, offering an instant green solution which blends into the natural surroundings even before the vegetation has established
Bag fill material
An engineered blend that creates a free-draining system with sufficient nutrients to gain a sustainable green finish. It is a mixture of soils, compost and sands that are free from pollutants and of a grade that will support the growth of vegetation.
When used in a water application, the bags are filled with clean fine gravels up to the required level.
Vegetation
The system integrates vegetation within the structure which helps ensure the longevity of its 120-year design life. Methods to vegetate the Rootlok structure: pre-seeding the Rootlok bags, hydroseeding and inserting live plants.
GeoGrow's design service is free of charge, and the company can provide engineered designs, calculations and CAD drawings where necessary.
