Context

Lightmain was asked by Basketball England to refurbish an existing basketball court at Millhouses Park in Sheffield. Basketball England wanted the site to be completely overhauled and is part of a wider project across the country which involves the refurbishment facilities within urban populations.

Project summary

  • Refurbishment of two existing frames
  • Supply and installation of two reduced height frames
  • Supply and installation of two official Basketball England frames
  • New surfacing

Project details

After initial excavation of the site, foundation pad sizes were installed onto concrete, ready for installation of the frames. The fence was extended on one side to 4m high in order to ensure the ball wouldn't leave the court, and the existing 3m posts were removed and replaced with sturdy 4m-high columns and a 1m-high fence panel extension.

Existing frames were installed onto the new pads along with new anti-theft bolts. To give them a more refreshed look, the old polycarbonate front of both boards was removed and replaced with a new one.

Reduced height basketball frames, which are ideal for younger players, were set at 8 ft high rather than the standard 10 ft.

Two bespoke frames with flexi-hoops were also installed featuring Basketball England's logo on an HDPE panel.

The surface of the court was given an anti-slip, anti-glare paint finish, which was chemically bonded to the existing tarmac surface. A black painted finish was chosen with white and red line markings, which makes the court stand out. Colourful spots were also added on the ground to help younger players develop their shooting skills.

Outcome

Overall, the new court now caters for all age groups and all abilities. and has an appealing finish which helps attract new players to the sport.

Testimonial

"We are thrilled with the new courts. We are really impressed with how the project was managed from start to finish. We have received some excellent feedback from players who have used the court since its completion. The number of baskets and new mini baskets for young children makes the site suitable for all ages and I am really excited to see it in use."
