Gwennap Parish Council
Gwennap Parish Council had a large green space housing their public park. It consisted of tired old equipment which had seen better days, some of which had been condemned and cordoned off. The Parish Council had the support of the local community in improving the park, installing new equipment, creating an attractive and inviting recreational area that would be accessible to everyone.
They applied for 2 extensive grants from the Seta Cornwall Trust Fund and the local United Downs Geothermal Community Fund, who were very generous with their contributions towards the new play scheme. The Parish Council provided some funding, alongside community fundraising and support from local businesses. This meant that Gwennap Parish Council had the exciting task of investing a substantial amount of money in an extensive new play area.
This was a very large project, where the old equipment needed to be extracted and disposed of, as well as new playground surfacing and equipment being installed. They needed a company who would work with them to achieve their new park, incorporating all their ideas and wishes, whilst remaining in budget. They also required the project to be completed under a tight deadline, so needed guarantees that the work would be completed in time for their grand opening.
One challenge was how to best use the large space, to create an amazing environment that would attract the community to visit more and meet everyone’s needs. They decided they wanted 2 play areas, safety surfacing and an outdoor gym, spread across an area of 2000m2. They still wished to keep as much green space as possible and wanted to achieve a safe, but natural look. Open spaces were to be incorporated for free play as well as to help nature to continue to thrive.
Schoolscapes worked closely with the Parish Council to design and create a very special space. Responding quickly and meeting onsite allowed Schoolscapes to assess the space and clarify what the Council was looking to achieve, in terms of the style and type of equipment.
Schoolscapes created and emailed an exciting package, so the Council scrutinise it. The design package included inspirational 3D designs (both digital and printed), renders and detailed project documentation. These ensured that they could visualise the project before realisation.
The Parish Council obtained many quotes and found that Schoolscapes’ design was the most creative and imaginative. They were give time to reflect upon the proposals and consult the local community. Schoolscapes' 26+ years of experience in installing play equipment meant various options were available to consider, ensuring the Council had the maximum benefits and best quality equipment at the lowest cost.
Schoolscapes' in-house manufacturing team then produced the timber equipment, which was carefully packaged and sent to the site. Meanwhile their installation team dismantled the old play equipment, completed groundwork to ensure the land was ready for the install. The site was flattened and landscaped to achieve the look requested.
The company's operations team co-ordinated the site development with the manufacture and delivery of equipment to ensure all went smoothly and ran on time. The installation team communicated daily with the Council during site visits and was happy to answer questions, being praised for their hard working and approachable attitudes.
Finally, when all the equipment was installed and checked, the safety surfacing was expertly laid where required by Schoolscapes' team. The natural look of bonded rubber play bark enhanced the park's look. Cellular rubber matting, where required, allows the grass to grow through maintaining as much green as possible.
The community now has an attractive, top-quality park to be proud of, attracting more regular visitors to the space than ever before.
Schoolscapes expertly installed a variety of outdoor equipment: swings; a spinning cone climber; 2 super play towers where children can climb, slide, swing and balance; a climbable mound and tunnel; a raised den; adventure trail elements; a speedy zip wire; animal springers; a spring surfboard; a mound with a climbing ramp and popular outdoor gym equipment.
Circular picnic benches, timber benches, under cover picnic tables, and a giant timber gazebo mean that large numbers can rest, picnic and shelter whatever the weather.
Families, adults and young people are now using the park as a safe place to play and socialise. It is bringing the community together and enabling them to become more active.
Inclusive equipment and offering children a place to retreat, where they can reflect quietly, helps to improve children’s physical and mental health as well as their wellbeing.
Adults can use the free, open-air gym equipment to exercise and increase their fitness levels. The double-sided gym equipment allows users to socialise whilst they exercise or compete. There is truly something for everyone.
Grants have enabled Gwennap to achieve an amazing play park that other Parish Councils are envious of, without breaking their budget. Completion of this huge installation as one project enabled the Parish Council to benefit from a substantial discount. The smooth pathway the project has taken has allowed the process to be stress- and worry-free; the project has been expertly handled from consultation and planning through to installation and completion.
The whole community enjoyed the grand opening. They are now benefitting from this quality recreational facility on their doorstep, providing a huge range of modern, top-quality equipment for generations to come, whilst enhancing its beautiful, natural and green space.
