An original Grade B listed building in Fort William, Scotland that was formerly a secondary school underwent major renovation works in 2018 transforming it into offices for the Highland Council.
As part of the works Alpha Rail delivered various bespoke metalwork products to the town – a distance of just under 400 miles away from their premises in Nottinghamshire.
Products included 50 linear metres of 1100mm-high decorative vertical bar railings, 25 linear metres of 800mm-high flat top railings, and six freestanding handrails for steps, which were installed by the client.
Specific requirements for coastal location
Due to the coastal location, special measures were made in order to protect the metalwork from the increased salinity in the atmosphere. Higher amounts of salt in the air can cause metal railings to rust and corrode faster than it would in the usual urban environment.
Alpha Rail galvanises all of its metalwork to BS EN ISO 1461 as standard to prevent rust. Further to this, the railings were polyester powder-coated in RAL9005 jet black to the PPA 571 ES coastal spec. This special coating has a higher resistance to adverse weather conditions, salt spray and air pollutants.
Along with this, the distance that the metalwork would be travelling had to be considered. Nearly 400 miles on a lorry leaves the railings exposed to the risk of being scratched or damaged in transport, as well as when being loaded and offloaded from the vehicle. The Alpha Rail yard operatives take great care when it comes to packaging products to ensure that they arrive at their destination in the same way they left.
