Barrell Pebble Seats are the original solid cast concrete Pebble Seats. New for 2019, Pebble Seats are now available with a textured, matt finish. This offers an alternative to the standard highly polished Pebble Seats which were previously the only option.
Barrell Pebble seats are ideal for high-profile and luxury landscape projects. The organic, natural shapes are inspired by the pebbles found on a Cornish beach. Pebble Seats bring an element of nature into any scheme - urban, rural or seaside. Pebble Seats have been commissioned for luxury offices, high-profile public realm, large-scale tourist attractions, schools and colleges, and private homes.
The matt finish Pebble Seat is smooth to the touch. Made from Ben Barrell's concrete mix, developed over 20 years working with the material. The concrete uses Cornish granite aggregate which gives a natural sparkle to the finished seats. Because they are so heavy, they don't need additional fixing (except the small ones) but cannot be moved. They are a trouble-free, long-lasting, elegant alternative to traditional seating options.
Making the Pebble Seats
The Pebble Seats are hand-cast at the Barrell Sculpture workshop and studio. There is NO mass production. The concrete is mixed in small batches and poured into individual moulds. The textured concrete Pebble Seats are then honed until they are smooth to the touch, with glints of granite shining through. Because they are hand-cast and hand-finished, and do not go through a factory or production system, the finish is of a high standard. The Pebble Seats curve so that they appear to be floating on the surface and the flat bottom is not visible once the are in situ.
Installation
Pebble Seats are very heavy. Installation does require lifting equipment, but once in place, the they are hard to vandalise. The smaller seats can be bolted to the ground for additional security if required.
Pebble Seats should ideally be placed on gravel or concrete. If they are going to be installed on soft landscaping, it is recommended they are given a concrete base to sit on.
Care
Pebble Seat are concrete so need very little care and maintenance but they will benefit from being polished with a soft cloth and kept free of debris.
