Historic Royal Palaces
The Magic Garden at Hampton Court Palace is a family playground, with turrets, battlements, mythical beasts and aerial walkways.
Outdoor Design was commissioned by the Historic Royal Palaces, which operates the attraction, to fabricate metal covers for the porthole windows in the Discovery Tower, a helter-skelter at the heart of Magic Garden.
Each of the 12 covers is unique, with a circular design inspired by the Palace’s Tudor architecture and the ‘Age of Discovery’, when explorers like Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh made their legendary voyages.
The covers, about 400mm in diameter, were laser-cut in stainless steel, polished to a high finish and welded to a stainless tube around 100mm deep that fits into the tower wall.
Such a prestigious location required absolute precision in the cutting; Outdoor Design also had to ensure there were no sharp edges, since they are installed in a public space.
