Nailsea is a small town located on the North Somerset Levels - a low-lying plain between Weston-super-Mare on the Bristol Channel coastline and the city of Bristol, 8 miles to the north-east. At the western end of Nailsea’s small High Street is the Crown Glass Shopping Centre, containing around 40 shops including branches of national chains and local independent stores. A market is held at the centre every Tuesday and a Farmers and Craft Market every third Saturday. Free car parking is designed to attract visitors to use their local shops rather than travel to nearby Bristol. Adjacent to the car park is an open green space, overlooked by the Sapphire Lodge retirement apartments.
Nailsea Town Council chose this site as the ideal location for a RailRoad seating assembly, comprising two straight seat modules with backrests adjoined to two curved bench modules, which can be used from both sides. The assembly can comfortably accommodate up to 10 people at any one time, which encourages more social interaction than smaller more conventional seating would. The seat has several armrests - which assist the elderly and less mobile in particular to sit down and get up - as well as a tablet surface which provides somewhere to place a coffee, sandwich or perhaps a newspaper.
